The 16 month old daughter of Wendy and Young Kwon of Columbia County in Florida, died on Tuesday when she was left in the car on that morning by her father. Both the mother and the father work for Florida’s Third Judicial Circuit, Wendy as an assistant state attorney, and Young as an assistant public defender.
Young was supposed to drop his daughter off at daycare on his way into work and failed to remember to do so. He didn’t realize he had forgotten his daughter until he returned home that afternoon, and discovered her still in the car seat. Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputies were called on scene to the Kwon household where the child was found not breathing and unresponsive.
Public Defender Blair Payne referred to the parents as “absolutely wonderful parents”, in a comment to the Florida Times-Union paper, but declined further comment to the Associated Press.
With Wendy and Young Kwon regularly working with the Columbia County Sheriff’s department, the CCSD is not overseeing the investigation. Instead, the death is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Further investigation into the toddler’s death is still underway and will determine if charges will be filed for the death.
